Ronny Chieng
Ronny Xin Yi
Chieng, born 21 November 1985 in Malaysia, is an actor and comedian. Chieng is
currently the senior correspondent of The Daily Show on Comedy Central. He also
produced and starred in the sitcom Ronny Chieng International Student, that
debuted on ABC Australia (Australia) in 2017. Chieng was the son of a Malaysian
Chinese family. He was born in Johor Bahru. From 1989 until 1994, he lived in
Manchester in New Hampshire. Chieng was a performer at a comedy festival that
took place in Melbourne, Australia in 2013 together with Trevor Noah. Two years
later Chieng was invited to take on the role of a correspondent on The Daily
Show, which Noah hosts. He was named among the top 10 comics to watch by
Variety in July of 2016. In October 2016, Chieng appeared as a guest on The
Daily Show to react to a Jesse Watts Fox News segment that many believed was
racist. Chieng presented an expletive-laden critique of the segment on Fox News
that was deemed conservative by many. Chieng also visited the city's Chinatown.
Watters had mocked the Chinese residents and conducted interviews with respect
in Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese. The viral video received media coverage in
the Washington Post and Slate In his youth, Chieng was a Singapore Sea Scout.
Chieng hasn't been able to get citizenship or permanent residence in Australia
despite living in Australia for ten years. Chieng joked in 2018 that he was
cynophobic, but later claimed that he was 100 percent not afraid of dogs.
